The danger of a single story
Last year when I read her book, Purple Hibiscus, I blogged about Chimamanda Adichie. She is a powerful, well-spoken woman from Nigeria, and today she had an important message for me.
Today she reminded me about the importance of the story and the consquence of the single story--when we start to believe only one story we know about a person or a people or about ourselves.
To better understand what I mean, just watch the video. She is much more eloquent than me, and she has a very important message to deliver about the power of story and its role in our prejudices and in our reality.
Her video reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Mitch Albom's The five people you meet in Heaven:
"No story sits by itself. Sometimes stories meet at corners and sometimes they cover one another completely, like stones beneath a river."

I can('t) ride my bike with no handlebars

I always thought kids who could ride their bikes without handlebars were all pretty daring and wreckless and there was something sexy and carefree about that that I admired in them. (Okay so the picture I found doesn't really depict sexy and carefree but you get what I mean).
Anyway, so I didn't have the balance or the balls to really try it. I was too scared and valued caution at the time (which I guess I still value). Thinking back on it I can also see kids riding without handlebars maybe less because they were actually carefree and had good faith that the world would catch them if they fell, but maybe it was an act done more to show off or to prove that they were cool or better than those who couldn't do it. Maybe not, maybe it had nothing to do with others and was more of a "Look at me! Yay I can do it all by myself!" Whatever the reason, what are we here to prove? And who are we proving it to? Ourselves? I don't know, I'm asking you...
The Flobots have a song that brings a way deeper meaning to the idea of riding a bike (living life) without handlebars. Check out the video. Something about this song touches me (beyond it has a catchy line/tune). There's a lot of words on the meaning of this song out on the WWW, but I'll leave it up to you to make your own meaning of it. I'm still figuring it out myself.
Wake up it's your past life
Very interesting video about a young boy named James. If you have any curiosity about past lives or none at all, it's a video worth watching to make you think about life and what it all really means.

My new fave artist: Janelle Monae!
Janelle Monae knows how to get down and funky. I can relate to her quirky tightrope dance, its carefree and cool and not being danced to impress anyone. Although heck its quite impressive, no? I cannot wait for her new CD, Archandroid!
This song is bringing her mainstream, but I like her other songs--check them out on myspace.
For more info on JM, here's a link to her website here.

Speechless about this video...well not totally ;)
Tonight I attended the first session in a series of wellness talks at a chiropractic center called Revolution Chiropractic Wellness Center. It's in Maple Grove. Funnily enough (to those who know I was entering sweepstakes pretty crazily for a week in January before classes started), I must admit that I won first prize at a Wellness event called, Restore Healing in March. I only entered in three contests while at this event, and I happened to win grand prize from this Chiropractic center which invited me to a 4-part lecture series on health, and I also won second place from Red Clover Clinic, an acupuncture clinic in Roseville for a one-hour foot reflexology session. I will reflect on that fabulous experience another post (as well as sweepstakes strategies), but for now just wanted to say two things.
Number One) Enter sweepstakes if they are around because as No Fear puts eloquently, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."
Number Two) Don't give up hope and ALWAYS believe.
Okay, I want to say three things...the above video almost made me cry in this seminar I went to tonight. The seminar itself was not new information to me, but this video was beautiful. I mean I practically cried! Ask Jay, he saw me holding back the tears. It is truly amazing what touches us, and I was lucky enough to have one of those moments tonight. I am so thankful for it.
Now, I must get some rest and prepare for a meditation retreat that is happening all day tomorrow followed by the researching and writing of a 25 page lit-review as well as other chores... Somehow this video makes me feel more ready for it and makes my life seem simple and easy just for a minute...

"Vexed sailors cursed the RAIN, for which poor shepherds prayed in vain."
Okay, I know rhyming is a little outdated, but on a dreary day like today I cannot refrain (haha) from recording the line! The above quote is from Edmund Waller, a British poet, whom I have no connection to, beyond the borrowing of his words, but like a true English major I must cite it before moving on here--screw the foot notes and being smooth! I have been done with smooth transitions for about 2 years now, yo, and even my profs might argue that they never were smooth in the first place...
So I plainly write this quote down because tonight I am off to a cabin with some friends, and of course all I was hoping for was good weather. But as the quote references--there are always two sides, and while I don't want it to rain, I recognize we do need the rain, so I can't really complain about it!
But I can tell you how it affected my day so far. I woke early this morning to be very productive--take care of the dishes from last night's dinner, organize my closet and clear the dirty clothes off the bedroom floor, as well as enter all my purchases from the month of july into my budget spreadsheet, and not to mention take a 6 mile run outside! But the rain washed out my ambitious spirits and now limits me to the dark corner of my apt., under a bright light, where I sit and type these thoughts. And at first it kind of ticked me off...because most of my tasks can be done indoors, so it shouldn't matter that it is raining...but its like because I see its rainy out and its dark in my apartment, I can't get myself to move onto my chores. On the bright side, I feel like it drew me to my blog, and it is always good to take some time to write down some thoughts even if you have no idea what direction they may be headed. Also, it got me to set up my printer (the first time its been plugged in since college), and I printed off some coupons, so when I run some errands today I can use them! Plus, at least once I am done with this post, I can feel like I accomplished something and perhaps move on to the next item on my list!
While I'm here, I might as well apologize for not having any mentionable ideas/projects to share with you lately. I have been more contemplative than normal these days, and it seems the nature of my blog is turning more diary-esque than sharing ideas of interest to the greater good, so again I apologize, but let me do something about that right now.
Below is a tune that I really like. Its by the Eels. It is playing right now at my apt. and it has been playing a lot around here lately. I just like how you can really feel the emotions. Not to mention it also reminds me of an old friend who used to be a big part of my life. So cheers to you, old chingoo.

Sorry insert link function isn't working right now, so you'll just have to go old school and cut and paste.
Beyond that sorta melancholy but beautiful melody, I'd also like to share my latest cooking endeavor that occurred last night:

Jay bought me an awesome potato book, which you can see here- http://www.amazon.com/Potatoes-pancakes-pommes-frites-Nichols/dp/0847820777/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1249655562&sr=8-1 and so I decided to surprise him with a recipe from the book last night. The above pics do not capture how lovely it tasted! Below is the recipe and instructions. Enjoy!
Kaeng Kai - Thai Chicken Curry w/ potatoes and coconut milk
* 2 TBsp Veggie Oil
* 1.25 boneless chicken (breasts or thighs), cut into large chunks
* 2 to 3 tablespoons red or green thai curry paste (I did 3 of the red, because Jay
and I enjoy spicy, but if you are not that into it I would suggest getting the
green kind or going less on the red)
* 2.75 cups of canned coconut milk
* 2.5 TBsp Thai fish sauce
* 1 lb of new potatoes, unpeeled, scrubbed and cut in half (I did more like 1.25
yukon potatoes, and I cut them into quarters or less so that they would cook
faster)
* 2 TBsp brown sugar
* 2 TBsp lime juice
To serve:
* 1/3 cup unsalted roasted peanuts
* 3 scallions, finely shredded
* Thai basil or cilantro (I did cilantro), coarsely chopped
* 2 Kaffir lime leaves, finely sliced (didn't have this laying around so I ommited)
1) Heat veggie oil in large wok or skillet, add chicken pieces, in batches if necessary. Saute them briefly on all sides to seal. Remove the chicken pieces to a bowl.
2) Add the curry paste to pan and stir-fry for about 30 seconds to release the aromas of the chiles and spices.
3) Add the coconut milk, fish sauce and sugar to the pan and stir well to combine. Return the sauteed chicken pieces to the pan, together with any juices accumlated in bowl.
4) Bring the mixture to a boil, then add the potato halves, reduce the heat. Cover the pan and simmer for about 15-20 minutes until the chicken is cooked and the potatoes are tender.
5) Stir in the lime juice. Serve with sprinkled peanuts, scallion strips, basil or cilantro, and the kaffir lime strips, if using. Steamed jasmine rice is a suitable accompaniment, although I used long grain, organic brown rice in the pic.
Tips: Make sure you chop the potatoes small enough that they can cook fast and evenly. A good dessert for this is lime fruit bars! After all the spice, a limey popsicle is just enough!
If you have any other questions about this recipe, let me know. Thank you for your patience. I am off now for a run upstairs, the day is rollin'...
Enjoy the rain everybody!

Sorry for another rant, but this is the last time, unless Palin somehow makes it into office, but in that case I might move...
Pamela Anderson on Palin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3vEfvpHDd8&feature=related
Not the most eloquent, but good word choice...
Matt Damon on Palin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anxkrm9uEJk&feature=related
I am on the same page with this boy 100%. Except for the fact that I don't want to know anymore about Palin-- I think I know enough now to make a more than sound decision that she is not ready to be in the White House.
Little blurb on Celebs and endorsement and how they affect the polls taken from
http://www.livescience.com/culture/081002-celebrity-endorsements.html
Acting interested
Actors have long been politically active, sometimes notoriously so, as in the case of Jane Fonda's anti-war activism. More recently, Matt Damon, in a widely-seen YouTube interview, expressed his alarm at John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin.
Damon, who compared the idea of Palin being president to "a really bad Disney movie," asked, "I need to know—does she really think that dinosaurs were here on Earth 4,000 years ago?" (For the record, the answer to Damon's question is yes; according to the Los Angeles Times, Palin stated that she believes that dinosaurs and humans lived together on Earth about six thousand years ago.)
While many people (including, of course, the celebrities themselves) like to think that celebrity endorsements and criticisms influence legions of fans, the track record is far from impressive. Just because the public watches actors in films or listens to their music doesn’t necessarily mean that they will support whoever the celebrity likes. In 2003, America's then-reigning pop princess Britney Spears publically supported George W. Bush, yet her endorsement had no effect on his popularity.
Perhaps the most influential celebrity endorsement is that of Oprah Winfrey. After all, those featured on her book club enjoy a dramatic boost in sales. But there's a big difference between buying a book and voting based on who Oprah likes.
Celebs such as Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney have endorsed Barack Obama, while Sylvester Stallone and Robert Duvall are throwing their weight behind McCain.
While a celebrity may or may not be able to influence the vote, their ability to raise campaign funds is undeniable: Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel are playing at an upcoming Obama fundraiser, and tickets won't come cheap.

Food for thought
Do we really want to be a part of a disney movie gone bad? In my opinion the fact that in some cases, half of Americans are still voting Republican and for a person like Palin, what progress have we made as a country over the years? What kind of judgment do we have as a nation? Can we just try and learn from history? Can Republicans or Republican supporters for the sake of freedom and what our constitution represents, take their pride and party for a moment and put it away? And can they just be a human being and take a genuine, honest and long hard look at the candidates and then look themselves in the eye or look their children or mother in the eye and say they are making a good decision by supporting McCain-Palin? Do you really trust these two people? I sure don't. If the answer is yes that they do trust them, then once again, I am very, very, very concerned for the direction we are heading as a country and as a people. And if the answer is yes, can somebody please speak up here and tell me some "straight talk" as to why I should believe? I am really curious, because I have not heard anything solid yet come from the Republican party on the main issues and it scares me that half of Americans are still okay with that silence!

The foolish chump that you think I am
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRgQns-TJGM
Artist : Ben Folds f/ Regina Spektor
Title : You Don't Know Me
Album : N/A
Genre : Modern Rock
I wanna ask you -
Do you ever sit and wonder,
It's so strange
That we could be together for
So long, and never know, never care
What goes on in the other one's head?
Things I've felt but I've never said
You said things that I never said
So I'll say something that I should have said long ago:
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all (at all)
You could have just propped me up on the table like a mannequin
Or a cardboard stand-up and paint me (paint me)
Any face that you wanted me
To be seen.
We're
Damned by the existential moment where
We saw the couple in the coma and
It was we were the cliche
But we carried on anyway.
So, sure, I could just close my eyes.
Yeah, sure, trace and memorize,
But can you go back once you know
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all (at all)
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me
If I'm the person that you think I am (Ah ah ahh)
Clueless chump you seem to think I am (Ah ah ahhh)
So easily led astray,
An errant dog who occasionally escapes and needs a shorter leash, then
Why the fuck would you want me back?!
Maybe it's because
(You don't know me at all)
Ahhh ah
Ahhh ah
(You don't know me,
you don't know me.)
Ahhh ah
Ahhh ah
So, what I'm trying to say is
What (What?)
I'm trying to tell you
It's not gonna come out like I wanna say it cause I know you'll only change it.
(Say it.)
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all (at all)
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all (at all)
What?
(Mmmm, ohh oh
Ah ah ah ah ah
Aha ah ah ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Aha ah
Ah ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Oh-oh-oh-oh oh ohh)
Yeah another youtuber...what's new? I know...longer one for reals coming your way soon. Of course this one was inspired by my frustrations with the latest post I worked on-- it was going in way too many directions so I just gave up...let's just say I was getting too deep, too fast, and without much cohesion, so you get this little youtube link instead...you think you know me...but you don't know me at all!!! (insert emo face) muahaha.

So, what I'm trying to say is
What (What?)
I'm trying to tell you
It's not gonna come out like I wanna say it cause I know you'll only change it.
(Say it.)
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all (at all)

You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all (at all)

Oh-oh-oh-oh oh ohh)
Yeah another youtuber...what's new? I know...longer one for reals coming your way soon. Of course this one was inspired by my frustrations with the latest post I worked on-- it was going in way too many directions so I just gave up...let's just say I was getting too deep, too fast, and without much cohesion, so you get this little youtube link instead...you think you know me...but you don't know me at all!!! (insert emo face) muahaha.

Dogatonic and Salsa Dancing
Good morning! Happy Hump Day. And speaking of humps...dogs, yeah! And what about dogs named Wednesday? Do I have a video for you! This video is quite entertaining and what inspired me to come here today. (I won't build it up, but if you watch it a couple of times, while trying to fight through the snoozy haze at work, it gives you a little inspiration and hope. At least it did for me. HAHA!!! Or more like just a good laugh).

To put meaning in an unmeaningful video, this dog could provide an analogy of how I feel sometimes when I don't want to put on the nice work clothes and when I don't want to make the shift to my more professional side (ha!)in the morning. Or in general, it relates to how I feel sometimes in certain life situations, just unenthusiastic/immobilized. And I usually try to hide it when I lack enthusiasm, but if you know me, you know I can't help that I wear my emotions on my sleeve and can't hide it well, just like this pup. If only I was as funny as this dog when I was bothered...
Oh and last night I was out late salsa dancing...and I really want to take lessons or dance lessons of any sort, so if anybody is interested-- let me know. Maybe I could just purchase a home learning video and we could do it together in my living room? Cuz I fo'sho do not want to invest a whole lot of money into my talent after yesterday night's performance. Which reminds me. Perhaps I think this video is funnier because I am sleep-deprived.
Well, there is always work to be done, and I have my Work Hard Wednesday panties on (hmm...I wish...potential, future craft project?), but rest assured, I will hope to upload some sort of cohesive, longer thought in the next few days here.
Until then enjoy the rain and eat some chocolate covered bacon. Mmmmm...
